Of all the things Emma had seen this was by far the funniest and strangest one to date.

Watching a grown man scramble over rocks, away from mermaids was funny by itself. But the look of abject terror on the man’s face was absolutely priceless, and Emma could not stop giggling.

“Should we help him?” Snow asked quietly her own lips fighting a smile.

“No.” Regina smirked at the man’s misfortune. It was the least he deserved. Greg Mendell slid down a rock closer to the clawing mermaids, all wanting a piece of him, and not in a good way.

“He can help us find Tamara and Henry, we need him alive.” David decreed with a sigh. He was really enjoying this though.

Emma’s eyes shot over to him along the railing and David fought hard to keep the smile from his eyes, but ultimately failed and joined Emma in laughing at the mans plight.

Anonymous asked: I think you should continue the fic "Afthermath"...

I think I might… but I have a few on-going ones that I have to finish first.

Emma Swan didn’t like boats. Emma Swan specifically didn’t like boats that travelled through magical portals. And this point was definitely made as she spent most of her time leaning over the railing of said boat reliving every bad food choice she’d ever made.

But there was a silver lining. She wasn’t the only one hanging over the railing.

“Eyes to yourself, Ms Swan.” Regina whispered tiredly as she leant against the railing that was the only thing keeping her standing up right. Emma chuckled and immediately regretted it.

“Serves you right.” Regina quipped with her eyes closed and a smug smile on her face.

“Shut up.” Came Emma’s eloquent reply. Wiping her mouth Emma slid to sit on the deck grateful that her body had finally finished its torture. “Why was it only us?”

Emma rounded the corner skidding over the gravel. David, Snow and Henry all looked up at her with hope in their eyes, it cut her deep to know she would have to snuff it out.

“Where’s my mom?” Henry finally asked.

“Saving us.” Emma replied flatly still not sure what had just occurred between them. “She said to tell you that it’s not too late for her to do the right thing.”

The silence surrounding their group was frustratingly tense, “she’s not coming back, is she?” Henry whispered brokenly unable to meet her eyes. Emma quickly bundled him up in a tight hug.

“Not if I have anything to say about it.” Emma whispered in his ear, enjoying his arms wrapping around her before she pushed away and stepped back the way she had come.

“Emma, wha-” Snow started watching her daughter moving away from them.

“Go, Emma.” David said his eyes shining with pride at his daughter. Emma sent a firm nod back before turning and running back to the woman who was going to sacrifice herself for a chance to do the right thing.

“EMMA!” Snows yell was the last thing she heard as she sprinted back to Regina. Coming to a halt again she watched the older woman shaking with the power she tried to keep at bay. Regina’s eyes shot up and locked with Emma’s. Emma watched as they softened for a moment before the usual hardened glare returned.

“Get out of here, Emma!” She hissed. Stubbornly Emma stayed where she was.

“I can’t hold this much longer. You have to go.” Regina practically begged forcing more of herself into the magic trying to hold the trigger at bay.

“No.” Emma whispered forcefully. “I’m not letting you do this alone.” Regina closed her eyes as she tried to keep her mind focused on her magic, she couldn’t be distracted by someone as annoyingly good as Emma Swan, not when the survival of everyone rested on her shoulders.

Regina’s eyes snapped open as warm hands held hers. Regina stared into Emma’s eyes, the light from the trigger turning them a fluorescent blue before they began to glow gold. With wide eyes both woman’s eyes turned toward the trigger, watching as it grew smaller as the light from their hands glowed brighter, changing from blue to gold.

They watched in awe until the trigger vanished. They were frozen. There was no blinding light, no massive explosion, there was nothing. Nothing to signify the end of the hardest moment in Regina’s life. And frankly she was kind of pissed.

But meeting Emma’s eyes and squeezing their hands she knew that they didn’t need a big dramatic moment. Because this - knowing she would be able to see her son grow up, and not having to raise him alone - it was enough.

It was more than enough. But as she saw Emma leaning in closer, she knew that this was finally her happy ending.

Based on 2x22 promo. “She did all she could yet it wouldn’t be enough. It never was.” Regina is trying desperately to save the town, but doing it alone is not enough.
